How Big Can a Fitted Sliding Wardrobe Be?

Back to Advice and Ideas

A single run of our sliding wardrobes can be up to 5 metres wide, and the doors can be up to 2,550mm high. With a centre divide we can carry a run further, and we have made wardrobes up to 8 metres wide. With an infill panel above the doors, we have fitted wardrobes in rooms with ceilings up to 3 metres high.

How wide a run can go

Up to 5 metres, a run is one continuous set of sliding doors. Beyond that, we add a centre divide, which lets the run carry on along the wall, and the longest wardrobes we have made are 8 metres wide. The doors do not all have to be the same width. Because we make them ourselves, their widths are planned to suit the run and the layout you want inside.

How tall a run can go

Our doors can be up to 2,550mm high, which covers the ceiling height in most houses. In older houses with higher ceilings, we add an infill panel above the doors, so the run still reaches the ceiling. We have fitted wardrobes this way in rooms up to 3 metres high.

Low and sloping ceilings

In attic bedrooms and loft conversions, we build the wardrobe to the line of the roof, so the low end becomes drawers or shoe storage. Our article on fitted wardrobes for loft rooms and sloping ceilings goes into more detail.

What we can fit around

We scribe around skirting boards and picture rails so the run sits tight to the wall. We normally cut a small slot in the coving, unless it is old Georgian-style coving that needs to be preserved. We also build around windows, chimney breasts and alcoves. We can usually work around a radiator, although where possible we recommend moving it to another wall.

Small rooms

At the other end of the scale, a fitted run works well in a box room, because it uses the full height of the wall and the sliding doors need no space to open. Our fitted wardrobe ideas for a small bedroom cover that in more detail.

Getting the measurements right

Every run we build is measured to the room it is going in. At a free home design visit, we measure the room, show you a 3D design of the wardrobe and give you a written price, with no obligation to go ahead. Our sliding wardrobes start from £799, and glass door wardrobes start from £999.
