Fitted Wardrobes for Loft Rooms and Sloping Ceilings

Back to Advice and Ideas

Loft conversions and attic bedrooms are usually the rooms where storage is hardest to sort out. Part of the room has a full-height ceiling, part of it slopes down to a low wall, and almost nothing you can buy in a shop is made to fit under the slope. A fitted wardrobe built to the roofline turns that awkward space into storage.

Why shop-bought furniture struggles in a loft

Shop-bought wardrobes come in standard heights, so in a loft they can only go where the ceiling is high enough. That usually means one wardrobe in the middle of the room and a strip of empty space along the eaves where nothing fits.

How a fitted wardrobe follows the slope

We measure the room and build the wardrobe to the line of the roof. The tall part of the run holds hanging space for full-length clothes, and the lower end, where the ceiling comes down, becomes drawers or shoe storage. You end up with one run along the full length of the wall, including the low end that would otherwise be dead space.

Sliding doors help here too, because they do not need any floor space in front of them to open. In a loft, where the usable floor is often narrower than it looks, that keeps the walkway clear.

Other awkward features we build around

Lofts are not the only rooms with awkward shapes. We also build around chimney breasts, alcoves, windows and radiators, and we scribe around skirting boards and picture rails so the run sits tight to the wall. We can usually work around a radiator, although where possible we recommend moving it to another wall.

At the other end of the scale, our doors can be up to 2,550mm high, and with an infill above them we have fitted wardrobes in rooms up to 3 metres high.

Choosing doors for a loft room

Loft rooms often have small windows, so the doors you choose make a real difference to how light the room feels. Mirror doors reflect the light from the window back into the room. Coloured glass doors and solid panel doors work well if you want a calmer finish. You can mix door types in the same run.

What it costs

A loft wardrobe is priced in the same way as any other fitted run, by its size, the doors and the storage inside. Our sliding wardrobes start from £799, and glass door wardrobes start from £999. Our guide to fitted wardrobe costs explains what moves the price.

If you have a loft room you are not sure what to do with, we can measure it at a free home design visit across South Wales and show you a 3D design with a written price. There is no obligation to go ahead.
