## Fitted or Freestanding?

Before you get as far as choosing doors, it is worth deciding whether a fitted wardrobe is the right thing at all. Here is the honest version.

### The floor you get back

A hinged door needs around two feet of clear floor in front of it before it will open, and in most bedrooms that is the strip you walk down to get to the bed. A sliding door needs none. In a small room that is not a small difference, it is often the difference between being able to walk round the bed and having to shuffle past it.

No swing, no lost walking space

### The space you paid for but cannot use

A freestanding wardrobe stops short of the ceiling and leaves a gap at one end. You paid for the floor area underneath it and you get none of that height. A fitted run goes to the ceiling and to the wall, so the space above your head that currently holds a suitcase and some dust becomes proper storage.

Full height, wall to wall

### What it costs over ten years

A flatpack wardrobe is cheaper on the day. It is also chipboard on a laminate floor, and most of them get replaced inside five or six years, usually because a door has dropped or the back has come away. Ours are built to stay where they are put. Whether that maths works for you depends on how long you are staying.

Bought once, not three times

### Rooms where nothing off the shelf fits

Sloping ceilings, chimney breasts, alcoves, a floor that runs downhill at one end. You cannot buy anything in a shop that fits those, because everything in a shop is made to a standard size. Every run we build is measured to the room it is going in, which is why the awkward corners are usually where we find the most storage.

Built to the room you actually have

### A wardrobe that turns the corner

Put two wardrobes on walls that meet and the doors clash, so they have to stop short of each other and the corner between them is lost. An L-shaped fitted run carries straight round the corner, so that square of floor and all the height above it becomes storage.

Use the corner

### When freestanding is the better answer

If you are renting, or you know you will be moving within a year or two, a freestanding wardrobe you can take with you is usually the smarter choice. If you are selling further down the line, a fitted wardrobe typically adds value to the house, so you are likely to get back what you paid. We would rather tell you that now than sell you something that does not fit your plans.

If you are staying put, a fitted run will change how the room works. If you are selling on, it can add back what it cost.

## Three Kinds of Door

The doors are the decision that changes how the room feels. Everything behind them is the same quality whichever you pick.

### Mirror doors

The ones we are best known for. A wall of mirror throws light back across the room, which is why a small or north-facing bedroom feels noticeably bigger with them in. You also stop needing a separate mirror on the wall, which is one less thing taking up space. They show dust and fingerprints more than a solid door, so they suit people who do not mind a wipe down now and then.

### Glass doors

Coloured glass, a bit like a kitchen splashback. The colour sits on the back of the glass, so nothing inside shows and you get a clean, modern wall that catches the light. Have one colour, mix several, or add acoustic wooden panels. Every glass door we make is safety-backed to British standards. BS 6206 (Class B & C), BS EN 12600 (Class 2B2).

### Solid panel doors

Solid doors in a range of colours and finishes. These are the ones that disappear into a room, because you can match them to the walls or the existing furniture and the wardrobes stop announcing themselves. No reflections and nothing on show, so they suit a room that is already bright, or a bedroom where you would rather the storage was not the first thing you notice.

## Whichever Doors You Pick, the Inside Is Yours

The doors are the choice. The inside is not really a fourth option, it is the part everybody gets. Hanging rails, shelves, drawers, shoe racks, laid out around what you actually own rather than a standard configuration. We work it out with you at the design visit.

## Which One for Your Room

### A small or box bedroom

Mirror, almost always. It is the single biggest difference you can make to how big a small room feels.

### A dark or north-facing room

Mirror or a light coloured glass, to move what light there is around the room.

### An already bright room

Any of the three. This is where solid doors come into their own, because you are not relying on them for light.

### A room with a sloping ceiling or an awkward corner

All three work. The doors matter less here than how the run is built, and that is what the design visit is for.

## What They Cost

From £799

Sliding wardrobes start at £799, while glass wardrobes start at £999. Door types are priced differently, and the final price also depends on the width of the run and how the inside is fitted out.

## Questions About Sliding Doors

### Do sliding doors ever come off the runners?

That is the reputation cheap sliding wardrobes gave the whole product, and it is a fair thing to ask. It comes down to the quality of the track and how carefully it is set, which is the part that gets rushed on a flatpack fit. We buy the runners ourselves and set them level on the day, and they are covered by the two-year warranty.

### Do sliding doors need space to slide into?

No. They slide across each other rather than out into the room, so the whole run sits flat against the wall. That is the reason they work in rooms where a hinged door has nowhere to open.

### Can I mix different doors in the same run?

Yes. We make all the doors ourselves, so you can mix and match them to suit your preferences.

### Do all the doors have to be the same width?

No. Because we make the doors ourselves, their widths can be planned to suit the run and your chosen layout.

### How wide can a run be?

A single run can be up to 5 metres wide. With a centre divide, we can continue the run further; we have made wardrobes up to 8 metres wide.

### How high can they go?

The doors can be up to 2,550mm high. With an infill above them, we have fitted wardrobes in rooms up to 3 metres high.

### Will they work with a sloping ceiling?

Yes, and it is one of the jobs we like most. An attic room or a bedroom in a converted loft usually has a run of low ceiling that nothing off the shelf will fit under. We build to the roofline, so the low end becomes drawers or shoe storage rather than dead space.

### What happens to my skirting board and coving?

We scribe around skirting boards and picture rails. We normally cut a small slot in the coving, unless it is old Georgian-style coving that needs to be preserved.

### Can you fit around a radiator, a window or a chimney breast?

Yes. We can work around most radiators with infill pieces or by scribing around them, although we would recommend moving the radiator to another wall where possible. We also build around windows, chimney breasts and alcoves.

### Can I have wardrobes in a room that is not a bedroom?

Yes. We have fitted storage in garages, landings, offices, laundry rooms, attics and even kitchens.

## Still Not Sure?

Most people are not, and that is what the free design visit is for.

We bring samples, measure the room, and you can see the difference between the doors in your own light before you decide anything.
